Top 10 Longest Living Mammals
There are several species of animals on the planet that are closer to immortality than humans. We no doubt enjoy an impressive legacy, but there are several other mammals on earth whose life span goes beyond 200 years. In this article, we will shed light on the top 10 nearly immortal mammals.
1. Bowhead Whales are popularly known as Arctic whales. They lead a legacy of being the closest mammals to immortality on Earth. It is said that the oldest bowhead whale was about 211 years old. Researchers claim that bowhead whales remain fertile till the age of 90.
2. The age of a blue whale is estimated by counting the layers of a dead whale’s wax-like earplugs after of course it’s memorial service. It is said that the oldest blue whale found by experts using this method was around 110 years old. However, the average lifespan of a blue whale is around 80 to 90 years.
3. Fin Whales are the second largest mammal in the world after the blue whale. This whale is popularly known as the greyhound of the seas. Experts suggest that Fin Whale has an average lifespan of 90 years.
4. Greenland Sharks are also known as the sleeper shark, ground shark, and grey shark. Greenland Sharks are found mainly in the North Atlantic Ocean around Greenland and Iceland. They are closely related to the Pacific sleeper shark. According to biologists, the life span of Greenland Shark is about 200 years.
5. The Killer Whale also known as Orcinus Orca is another mammal with the legacy of a long life. It is found in oceans and seas throughout the world. The upper body of a Killer Whale is black and the underside is white with white patches behind its eyes. Life expectancy of Killer Whales is 100 years.
6. Human Beings, the most intelligent species on earth can also has the legacy of being the longest land living mammals and are probably the most likely creatures to achieve true immortality. Human beings have a life span of over 110 years.
7. African Elephant is one of the largest living mammals on earth with a general lifespan of 60-70 years. The giant African Elephants are much lager than Asian elephants and are scientifically known as Loxodonta Africana.
8. The average life span of the Asian elephant is 60 years, but according to Guiness Book of World Records, the oldest Asian elephant was LIN Wang who lived to the age of 86 years. She died in the year 2003 at the Taipei Zoo.
9. A Western Lowland Gorilla’s life expectancy is approximately 50 years. Colo, a Western Lowland Gorilla is 56 years old and is the oldest gorilla at the Columbus Zoo. Colo was born in the year 1956 and has three children, 16 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
10. The lifespan of the Western Lowland Gorilla is followed by that of camels. According to experts, camels have an average lifespan of approximately 30+ years. However, some camels have lived up to 50 years as well.
