Birds have shown us a long lived legacy with their irreplaceable charisma, aerodynamics, and beauty. There are several species of birds in this world that enjoy an almost immortal lifespan and some of them even outlive human beings. Here is a list of 10 almost immortal birds found in various corners of the globe.
1. Amazon Parrot: These parrots are as close to immortality as a bird gets with a lifespan of 104 years. They have created a legacy of being a human’s best winged friend. These medium sized parrots are found in South America, Mexico and the Caribbean. Amazon parrots are known for their amazing ability to imitate us with their almost human speech.
2. Turkey Vulture: Scientifically known as Catharses aura, Turkey Vulture is also known as Turkey Buzzard. According to the experts, the life span of Turkey vulture can exceed 100 years. This is one of the largest species of birds and has the strongest sense of smell. Many people have had memorial services performed by this winged reverend.
3. Swan: It belongs to the family of Anatidae that also consists of geese and ducks. Generally the lifespan of a mute swan is 10- 20 years but experts have claimed that some can live over 100 years. This large aquatic bird has a vicious temperament and has strong wings. Swans are basically found in either sides of the Equator across the Northern & the Southern Hemisphere.
4. African Grey Parrot: Popularly known as grey parrot, this medium sized bird is found in primary as well as secondary rain forest of West Africa and Central Africa. It is considered as one of the most intelligent species of birds in the world. The life span of African Grey parrot is 73 years, according to the experts.
5. Pionus Parrot: It has a lifespan of 25-50 years. This medium sized parrot is native to Mexico, Central America and South America. Pionus Parrots have short tails and they are smaller in size than Amazon parrots. These parrots have red feathers beneath their tails for which they are also known as Red-vented parrots.
6. The Superb Parrot, also known as Barraband’s Parrot and Green Leek Parrot is basically found in South-eastern region of Australia. This species of parrots are of bright green color and have long pointed tails. They have an average life span of 25 years to 36 years.
7. Sulphur-crested cockatoo: It is generally found in the wooded habitats in New Guinea and Australia. These birds have a long lifespan and some of these birds have lived up to 80 years. They have a remarkable talent of mimicking human voice.
8. Eagle: We have immortalized the legacy of eagles in our currency. An eagle is known for having the longest lifespan of its species. It can live up to 70 years. The life span of Bald Eagle is about 28 years and golden eagle enjoys a lifespan of about 30 years.
9. Great Horned Owl: Experts opine that the lifespan of a great horned owl can go up to 68 years. Great horned owl is a nocturnal bird and is popularly known as Tiger Owl. This bird of prey is native to America.
10. Royal Albatross : It is one of the largest and least immortal seabirds that belong to Diomedeidae family. It enjoys an average lifespan of about 42.3 years. Royal Albatross have two species- Southern Royal Albatross and Northern Royal Albatross. Southern Royal Albatross is larger than Northern Royal Albatross
